Biography
Oscar Bannink was born in Amsterdam, of a very mixed descent: Dutch, German, French, Portuguese, Sri Lankese (Ceylonese), Indonesian and Chinese.
At 3 years old, he stepped into the educational Montessori System, which he followed to the end of high school. As he showed a special gift for music, at the age of 6 he went to the Amsterdamsche Muziekschool for a general musical education, and started learning how to play violin very soon after.
Meanwhile he did many sports, but Judo, followed by Karate (Shotokan style), started his passion for martial arts.
At 17, based on his natural curiosity, creativity, perfectionism, and sense of care for others, he started the study of Dentistry, at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
In parallel, he also started playing in some amateur orchestras, most noteworthy the VU Orchestra, and left Karate for Jiu Jitsu, then T'ai Chi.
After graduating he tried getting settled working as a dentist, but that proved very difficult at the time, so he decided to try his luck elsewhere and for the three next years became a computer programmer at the software company of Gimbrère & Dohmen Software.
On a martial arts level, he took a new step and started Wing Tsun, which he never left.
Then, after a yearlong marketing project for an American company: Cardiolife Inc., he decided to rethink his orientation.
Musicians from a chamber orchestra, the Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam, suggested that he'd pursue a career in music. He did not feel professional enough yet, so he took a part-time job at this orchestra for a basis, and next to that studied violin more intensely than ever before. Because the part-time job was to become a full-time management job, he decided to face his passion and his fears and give violin a real chance.
Enjoying fully this passion of playing and the freedom of living an artist's life, he is now a freelance violinist. Working regularly in orchestras like the Radio Symphony Orchestra and Holland Symfonia, he is also first violinist in Philharmonia Amsterdam as well as in Baroque Ensemble Eik & Linde.
